Catholic Extension

Founded in 1905, Catholic Extension serves the pastoral mission of the Church by ensuring that the essential ministries of under-resourced and isolated U.S. dioceses remain intact by helping these dioceses build their capacity for the future. This is achieved by operating as both a fundraising and grant making organization that carries its work out strategically, with a high touch, and in a spirit of optimism and innovation.  For more information about Catholic Extension, visit the CE Website.

Over the last 116 years, Catholic Extension has distributed more than $1.3 billion to build strong communities of faith, so that Catholics in these areas have the tools to inspire hope and ignite change. Activities and programs supported include: southern border initiatives, post-hurricane rebuilding in Puerto Rico, support for college campus ministry and youth outreach, construction and renovation of churches and facilities, and funding for the education of lay and ordained leaders.  Last year alone, the financial impact on these communities was more than $90 million when one considers all Catholic Extension’s programs and partnerships collectively.

Every year, Catholic Extension raises new philanthropy – $25 to $30 million from 25,000 donors via a mature development program that includes annual, major, and planned giving.  To learn more about how giving makes Catholic Extension’s work possible, see our most recent Annual Report.

Catholic Extension has a full-time staff of 50 employees based at its headquarters in Chicago or in one of its regional offices. Its staff is comprised of talented and experienced professionals working in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment and team-focused culture.

Communications Associate

This is a newly created role designed for a skilled, proactive contributor looking for growth and opportunity in the dynamic field of marketing communications within an established but entrepreneurial national nonprofit. The position reports to the Co-Leaders of the Communications and External Relations Department.

Specific duties of the role include:

  • Research, write and edit content for use in a regularly published, 50-page magazine that is sent to 60,000 households. Working on the magazine team means taking on a wide range of potential assignments: helping to identify themes and stories; interviewing; writing captions and articles; editing; and collaborating with our design partner on layout and retouches before distribution.  A magazine is always in the works and there’s a lot to do to maintain its quality, reputation, and reach.  See several recent magazines at org/magazine.
  • Support and grow our social media presence by staying active on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Catholic Extension currently has 97,000 Facebook followers, 8,500 Twitter followers, and 4,900 Instagram followers. These numbers continue to grow each week, and to see higher numbers will require compelling daily postings and conversations on all three platforms.
  • Update our CE Website using WordPress. For the right candidate, this could include video editing in addition to writing and editing narrative and updating numbers.
  • Collaborate with members of our fundraising team to craft email messages to donors and potential donors as part of our planned giving legacy program and Two By Two Partner program (for donors of $1,000 or more).
  • Use data analytics to understand and report on what is of interest to those who visit our website and engage with us on social media, so that we can share news and stories that inspire them, as well as to support our organizational goals and objectives.

The Communications Associate will join an existing 5-person department, including the two Co-Leaders who have other responsibilities as well.  The team collaborates to produce stories of impact in America’s poorest regions of the United States. It writes about faith and hope in Puerto Rico, community building along the Texas-Mexico border, coming together with purpose in Alaska, and vibrant expressions of faith on Indian Reservations in the Dakotas, to name only a few examples.
